Anvil Trophy Inter Club Match Racing

Posted: 20/4/2016

The Inter-Club Match Racing hosted by Royal Ulster YC on Saturday was a great success.  The three teams representing Carrickfergus Sailing Club, Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club and Ballyholme Yacht Club joined the host Club, RUYC, for some exciting short, sharp races right in front of the Clubhouse.  The two boats used were the Beneteau Platu 25s of Russell McGovern’s Stratus Sailing and due to the fresh breezes no spinnakers were used. The first matches were in a round robin format of six races where each team sailed against the others.  The conditions were quite trying, with the northerly winds that had been blowing since Friday producing a difficult up wind leg in the choppy seas.  Two rounds of a short windward leeward course were sailed in each match race.

After the round robin, Carrickfergus sailed off against Royal North to decide the minor places with the Cultra team coming out ahead.  Ballyholme then took on Royal Ulster in a best-of-three final to decide the overall winner.  The first match went right to the wire with a surge off a wave leaving RUYC just short as BYC inched past to take the win.  The second match was altogether more clear as BYC saw off the RUYC team on the start line and never had to look back.

Overall winners were Ballyholme YC with skipper Gareth Flannigan and crew Robin Flannigan, Dave Fletcher and Bob Espey.  The crew were presented with the Anvil Trophy back at RUYC.  Many thanks are due to Kenneth Halliwell for suggesting the come-back of inter-club racing and to Robin Grey and his team on the Committee Boat for managing the racing so efficiently. Thanks also to the RIB drivers who had a damp chilly job ferrying crews to the boats between matches and to the Committee Boat owners, John Minnis and Brian Roche and Phil Davis.

The RUYC team was: Connor Simms, John Simms, Colin Coffey and Katy McKay.
