Sir Thomas Lipton Memorial Cup, update from Rear Commodore Johnny Ritchie.

I am reporting back on the success of the Sir Thomas Lipton Memorial Cup presentation dinner following a debriefing  Zoom meeting with John Taylor, our man in Auckland, Vice Commodore, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Sailing Secretary and myself.

The dinner took place at 7:00pm on Wednesday 24th February New Zealand time. It was a very relaxed but exclusive affair with a party of 17. We were honoured to have the presence of Francesco Longanesi Cattani – Prada Team PR who very kindly hosted and sponsored the event. Also, Aaron Young  Commodore RNZYS who provided the venue, Agostino Randazzo-Commodore - Circolo Della Vela Sicilia Yacht Club the Challenging Yacht Club who received the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup.

Agostino Randazzo was very pleased to receive our cup and was even more impressed to receive the personally addressed letter of congratulations from our Commodore, HRH The Duke of Gloucester. I suspect it will be framed on the wall in their Club beside the Sir Thomas Lipton Memorial Cup.

The event was shared with the Ida Lewis YC. Their Commodore, Simon Davidson presented their Pell Cup to the Challenger. Our two clubs have a long history as four of our Cup presentations were held in the Ida Lewis YC.

The attached photos speak for themselves. Acknowlement to ©COR36 – Studio Borlenghi.

Another interesting fact is regarding a Sailing crew member on Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, His name is Shannon Falcone who is the Great Nephew of RUYC member Heather Forrest (nee Gray) and Great Grandson of the late Molly Gray.

Here is a link to the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli web site showing a photo of Shannon Falcone along with a history of his very successful sailing career.
