Cricket Match Revived

Posted: 13/9/2019

It took 82 years for the rematch but RUYC managed to field a team of 8 last Sunday 7th September at Hollywood Cricket Club, The team of 7 men and 1 woman took to the field against a 10 strong RNIYC team and the rain stayed off to allow 20 overs each and much craic and banter.

Fielding was ultimately RUYC’s stronger discipline, which speaks volumes for their cricket knowledge and skill and this was quickly apparent when Colm McLarnon and Chris Stewart took to the crease to bat. Their efforts earned them a prize for the lowest scoring batting pair and they left with a bath toy a piece. The score actually went backwards but who can criticise two men who just wanted to run everything, and Colm soldiered on even with a pulled hamstring.

David Kernaghan, Iain Kennedy and Jamie Clegg were the star batters with Gareth Flannigan bringing up the rear. John Minnis had a strong performance both bowling and batting and he even looked like he could have gone another 20 overs by the end. There was no let up for the only girl on the team, Tracy Flannigan, who stepped up at the last minute after a cry off (seems the beer in Portpatrick was a more attractive proposition) and took a wicket but also a hard ball to the thigh and played on regardless.

The result was RNIYC 359 to RUYC’s 264 but a great day was had by all who played in a truly well spirited and fun game of cricket. The team is looking forward to the rematch next year although some training will come in useful.
