Roger Clegg

Roger Clegg started sailing initially at Ballyholme Yacht Club in GP14’S which were great two handed, 3 sailed yachts, providing a good grounding in boat and sail handling.

Roger’s first ‘big’ boat was a Trapper 300 shared with Dr Billy Baird. Roger and Billy then bought Mezzanine which brought them many successes including winning the NIOC on two occasions, Round the Isle of Man race, WHYC and the longest Ailsa Craig Race to date - leaving Isle of Man to port, Ailsa Craig to port then back to the finish line at RUYC.

Roger met his wife Suzi at West Highland Yachting Week in 1981, they married in 1983 and continued their sailing hobby together.

Other boats followed, Roger and Suzi bought a Moody 31, then Mezzanine was bought back, fitted out, cruised and raced in the family class winning West Highland Yachting Week overall in 1991. Their most recent yacht was Ocean Tramp which they sailed locally, took her to the Med for a few years, brought her back home and raced regularly on Thursday nights, local Regattas, and cruised annually up the West Coast of Scotland.

Roger has previously served on the RUYC Committee, has been Sailing Secretary, is currently on Finance and Membership Committees and is a Trustee of the club.

He also represented Ireland on a number of occasions gaining his first cap in 1973, and was selected for the IRFU  tour to  New Zealand and Fiji in 1976.
