About Garth Maxwell

Garth Maxwell started sailing at Ballyholme yacht club in the cadet class and was crew in a cadet called “Flipper” which won the Cadet Northern Ireland championships. (nothing to do with his ability, he adds!)

Garth then moved into big-boat sailing with the Clegg/Baird partnership. Crewed by members of Bangor Rugby Club, on Mezzanine Of Down. The team combined great enjoyment with notable success, including winning the NIOC twice and the Ailsa Craig and Isle of Man race several times.

Garth also sailed on Hesperia III for several years, the iconic Frers 49, with the Buchannon / Gomes combination.

Garth is still racing on big boats and has enjoyed many campaigns with Game Changer and Blacksmith recently.

After his senior rugby career finished, he joined the “laser racing fleet” in BYC and was a key figure in growing that fleet to one of the biggest in the UK. He enjoyed many masters events home and abroad, especially the Europeans and World championships. He was the Irish National Champion in the mid 2000’s.

He also has a passion for Cruising and has cruised extensively in the West Coast of Scotland. He also enjoyed a few years cruising in the Mediterranean with the Clegg Family.

His other sporting interests include golf and skiing. He also played rugby for Bangor Rugby Club during its highly successful years in the 1980s and 1990s, represented Ulster, and competed in several 7’s tournaments for the Irish team.

He was a career Banker in Northern Bank and is married to Paula.
